A stolen car which exploded in a ball of flames in a Mill Park street was deliberately lit.

South Morang CFA captain Lindsay McHugh said the car was dumped at the corner of Diosma Way and Telopia Cres and torched about 5.15pm on October 31.

The white 1980s Holden Commodore had been stolen from Footscray on October 30, with damage to the front suggesting it had been involved in a collision before the fire.

Mr McHugh said the car had been dumped and an accelerant used to light the interior. The theft and fire are being investigated by Mill Park police.

Mr McHugh described the blaze, done in a populated suburban street, as “very dangerous”.

Blossom Park resident Franko Stipcevic, who photographed the burning car, described hearing a muffled whoosh from his lounge room before the explosion, followed by the sound of a motorcycle fleeing the scene.

“We raced outside and could see a car on fire across the road,” he said.

“The feeling of the radiant heat on our face, even from across the street, was intense.”

Mr McHugh said it took three units around five minutes to bring the fire under control.

Witnesses should phone police on 9407 3333.
