Quick actions save urban areas
Firecalls/IncidentsThe State Government has praised the actions of local CFA volunteers who stopped the Black Saturday fire from ripping through the homes of South Morang and Mill Park.

While most of the firefighting action was focused on the deadly blaze in Kinglake, Black Saturday flames, aided by strong wind, crossed the Plenty River and landed in Plenty Gorge Park, sparking 20-meter high flames that threatened residential homes.

Heat wave sparks electrical fires
Firecalls/IncidentsWHITTLESEA CFA crews remain on high alert today following a spate of electrical fires across the municipality.

South Morang CFA captain Lindsay McHugh said sweltering temperatures had unleashed a string of fires in the past two days to properties caused by overheated transformers and switchboards.

Reminder on portable solid fuel barbecues

Australia Day is traditionally celebrated with a barbecue, as family and friends gather in the region’s many parks and reserves to enjoy good food, great company and the warm, sunny conditions.

Warning on the lighting of bonfires
Fire Danger InfoCFA along with Mitchell and Whittlesea Councils are issuing a warning that the lighting of bonfires is not permitted under the Fire Danger Period. This follows sightings of bonfire-like structures on properties in the Wallan (Mitchell) and Eden Park (Whittlesea) areas.

Municipal Fire Prevention Officers from both the Mitchell and Whittlesea Councils have reported seeing the bonfire-like structures on selected properties. Several Wallan property owners have also been contacted by Council staff querying them on the bonfire structures.

Fire danger still high despite weekend rain
Fire Danger InfoDespite the weekend’s soaking rain across most of Melbourne and regional Victoria, the fire danger outlook remains high and fire restrictions remain firmly in place.

Acting Manager Community Safety David Allen said while the rain was welcome, it would not change CFAs central message that residents should prepare for what is still expected to be a severe fire season.
