Warning on the lighting of bonfires
CFA along with Mitchell and Whittlesea Councils are issuing a warning that the lighting of bonfires is not permitted under the Fire Danger Period. This follows sightings of bonfire-like structures on properties in the Wallan (Mitchell) and Eden Park (Whittlesea) areas.Municipal Fire Prevention Officers from both the Mitchell and Whittlesea Councils have reported seeing the bonfire-like structures on selected properties. Several Wallan property owners have also been contacted by Council staff querying them on the bonfire structures.
CFA Acting Manager Community Safety, David Allen, said bonfires were a definite no-no during the Fire Danger Period.
“Whilst no bonfires at this stage have been lit, the message must go out that any lighting of a bonfire is a clear contravention of the Fire Danger Period (FDP) and therefore illegal. Bonfires are classified as open fires and therefore deemed a fire risk and a threat to public safety.”
Mr Allen added that unlike Council permits issued to rural property owners to conduct legitimate burn-offs during the FDP, councils would not be issuing permits to light bonfires.
“Bonfires are not categorised as being for business or environmental management purposes. They are for private entertainment purposes and there is a valid fire risk attached to them.
“What happens if a bonfire gets out of control? What safety measures have been put in place? Are the people supervising the bonfire ready and able to deal with all contingencies, including inebriated revellers?
“The CFA wants everyone to have a good time over Christmas and the New Year—but we want to them to do it safely and responsibly.
“Fire restrictions are now being enforced and the CFA is taking a zero-tolerance approach to bonfires and all illegally lit fires—any such fires will be reported to Victoria Police, who may prosecute offenders.”
Mr Allen reiterated that the FDP, introduced on 17 November 2008 for the municipalities of Wyndham, Melton, Macedon Ranges, Hume, Mitchell, Moorabool and Whittlesea, will remain in force until 1 May 2009.
The FDP and Total Fire Ban is explained in specific detail with the Can I or Can’t I? brochure, downloadable from CFAs web site (www.cfa.vic.gov.au) or from your local CFA fire station.
